Tinned mince beef

I know Delia in her 'How to Cheat at Cooking' book/show advocated using this product. Anyone tried it? Is it any good? Also how much is it roughly per can.

Do you know if Waitrose do a similar product?

  • I tried tinned mince many years ago.....once. Never again. I don't know if it's improved but i'm not going to risk it again.

  • Even the sound of it makes me feel quite sick - sorry but I wouldn't go near the stuff!!

    *bok*

  • Delia used M & S tinned minced beef. I bought some just to try her cheats cottage pie recipe, to see if it was any good. It was alright - very lean and useful if you're in a rush, but not as good as butcher's steak mince. I think it cost about £1.89 a can. No idea about Waitrose as we don't have one up here.

  • The M&S cans are OK if you're in a real rush.
Talk to anyone who's worked in a meat meals factory like students on a holiday job, and they'll tell you the meat is graded on arrival and the best goes into M&S, Waitrose next, other supermarkets next, and pet food last.

  • I used to eat tinned stewing steak a lot as a student and it was delicious. Not sure about the mince though,

  • just bought a can of M&S minced lamb. £2.95 I spent! It'd better be nice!

  • My dad went through a phase of making stews and pies using tinned mince. If you add enough extra flavourings then it can be ok. It just becomes a filler.

  • I always have a few tins in.............:D

The M&S ones are nice, particularly the minced lamb

I like sainsbury own brand tinned Stewing Steak, it's got nice gravy and makes a smashing meal with a pile of mash or chips.............

I odten use them as the base for curries and pasta sauces

  • My mum got a tin a few months ago as she fancied jacket tattie with mince.

I opened it and to me it looked and smelled like dog food....blugh!

She didn't much like it either and said it's nothing like the tinned mince they had when she was younger.

Won't be buying it again as it is so easy to do it from scratch.

  • So I sweated down finely diced carrot and garlic in olive oil and butter with a little thyme. Added Worcestershire sauce and reduced it down. Added the can of lamb mince and a couple of handfulls of frozen peas. Put it in a shallow dish and topped it with leftover mash. Baked in oven for fifteen minutes and served...

It was pretty nice. Not as good as homemade from scratch but pretty tasty.

It has always has had that look and feel to the stewed steak cans too.

Corned beef is about as far as I stretch with tinned meat.

Corned beef with mash, once in a blue moon, is about as far as I stretch with tinned meat.

I don't think Waitrose do, I looked last night on my way home.

When I was in Morrisons on Wednesday the lady in front of me at the checkout bought 15 packets of Schwartz savoury mince mix

  • £3 for tinned meat!!??? seriously? I am sure its alright at that price ...but i cannot disassociate the idea of tinned meat from pedigree chum....
