Trump Agains Trans People in the Military
Three years subsequently the Obama assistants told transgender individuals they could serve openly and have access to gender-affirming medical and psychological care, the Trump assistants has reversed form. The Pentagon on Fri began to implement a controversial new policy that critics say is essentially a "don't inquire, don't tell" policy for trans service members.
"The policy is insidious in operation just designed to be as comprehensive a ban equally possible," a report from the nonpartisan Palm Center, which studies LGBTQ military problems, stated. "In that sense, it is a perfect parallel to the failed 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, also sold as non being a ban although designed to systemically push button gay people out of military service — or at to the lowest degree keep them silent and invisible."
Nether the new policy, which the Section of Defense has insisted is non a "ban," currently serving transgender individuals who have already received a diagnosis of gender dysphoria may go on to serve in their preferred gender, receive hormone treatments and undergo gender-affirming surgery. But after Friday, anyone with gender dysphoria who is taking hormones or has already undergone a gender transition volition not exist allowed to enlist. Further, whatsoever currently serving troops diagnosed with gender dysphoria afterward this date will have to serve in their sex every bit assigned at nascency and will be barred from taking hormones or getting gender-affirming surgery.
The new transgender military machine policy was ignited by a series of surprise tweets fabricated by President Donald Trump almost ii years ago. His abrupt Twitter proclamation caught the Pentagon off-guard and essentially forced the Defence force Department to implement the ban — even though the president himself has just talked about it twice publicly in the last 2 years.
Trump dodged a shouted question on July 26, 2017, the day of his tweets, but addressed the issue Aug. x.
"I take corking respect for the community. I think I have great support — or I've had groovy back up from that community. I got a lot of votes," he told reporters. "But the transgender — the armed services is working on it now. They're doing the piece of work. It's been a very difficult state of affairs. And I think I'm doing a lot of people a favor by coming out and just maxim information technology. As you know, it's been a very complicated issue for the military. Information technology's been a very disruptive effect for the armed forces. And I recollect I'grand doing the military machine a great favor."
NBC News questioned Trump last Oct about his campaign promise to protect transgender people, in low-cal of the ban and other news related to how his assistants had been looking at defining gender under federal civil rights law.
"We're looking at it. We accept a lot of dissimilar concepts right now," he said at the time. "They have a lot of different things happening with respect to transgender right now. You know that equally well as I do, and we're looking at it very seriously."
When asked a follow-up question about his "promise to protect the LGBTQ community," Trump replied: "I'm protecting everybody."
When told that "transgender Americans say you've given up on them," Trump added: "You know what I'm doing? I'm protecting everybody. I want to protect our land."
While Trump's policy restricting transgender military service starts Friday, in that location are yet iv lawsuits pending confronting the policy.
Shannon Minter, the legal managing director for the National Middle for Lesbian Rights, one of the LGBTQ advancement groups fighting the policy, said the legal battle is "far from over."
"All iv cases are proceeding," he said last month. "Just because an injunction is lifted, doesn't mean case is over."
Army Staff Sgt. Patricia King, the starting time openly transgender infantry soldier in the military machine, is among those still working to fight the new policy from within.
"I know nosotros are facing an uphill battle," King said before long afterwards she testified before Congress last month, but "my goal is to correct this wrong."
